They were bred from multiple species to create this colourful look and are favoured by many Malawi keepers for their bright, colourful and varied appearance. Their aquarium should be large and dressed with plenty of rocks to act as a form of real estate for the fish to establish their territories on. These cichlids need very hard water with a high pH and this is typically achieved by using ocean rock and/or coral sand. With that said, dark substrate brings out the colours better and makes the peacocks feel safer. KH buffers are an excellent alternative to coral sand. Plants are not recommended for thi.
