They go through an incredibly fascinating color-changing process as they mature with each stage being referred to as "phases." Phase 1 is the juvenile phase where they are entirely dark gray or black and are covered in yellow spots. Phase 2, the sub-adult stage, is when the golden sailfin pleco's iconic gold color begins to fade in, usually starting at the tail and working forward into the body. Phase 3 is when their species name of luteus , Latin for "yellow," is best represented as the adult pleco has turned completely golden yellow.
