They are suitable for Malawi set ups and coexist well alongside peacocks, haps and other mbunas. Their aquarium should be large and dressed with plenty of rocks to act as a form of real estate for the fish to establish their territories on. This is key to successfully keeping Malawi as their aggression is partly territorial. These cichlids need hard water with a high pH and this is typically achieved by using ocean rock and/or coral sand. With that said, dark substrate brings out the colours better and makes the Yellow Labs feel safer. Plants are not recommended for this species as they will most likely eat them.
