It is a hardy, community friendly dwarf cichlid native to Bolivia and Brazil. They prefer soft, acidic water in an aquarium that's at least 75cm long for a single pair. This allows the Rams to have their individual territories outside of breeding times, which in turn reduces the likelihood of an territorial disputes. With that said, these fish are not particularly aggressive when they're not breeding and can be housed in communities. They will spend much of their time near the base of the aquarium.
